Rings was created for the District of Saanich on Vancouver Island, in celebration of its 100th anniversary. A trail system that runs through the municipality was expanded and improved incorporating public art; Rings was designed to bring many elements of that environment together in one form. In the piece, one hundred stainless steel tree rings are telescoped to allow the viewer to experience a physical sense of time. Rings cast in the concrete base are signifiers of a path taken, a mark left behind, and these marks also echo the tilled soil of the rural farmland in the region. The steel and concrete in this piece refer to the industrial and residential, both in the immediate vicinity of the trails.
